Private Thornburg was shot in the thigh on June 18th, 1864 during the fighting around Petersburg Virginia. He was transferred to Company E of the 20th Indiana Infantry in the fall of 1864 and remained there until his muster out on July 12th, 1865.

He filed for a pension in May of 1876.
