Joseph D. Smith

Private Smith was admitted to the hospital soon after arriving in Washington D.C. in the late summer of 1861. He is reported as having the measles. Having recovered from that he then suffered from a umbilical hernia while at Fort Craig Virginia. On November 1st he received a Certificate of Disability for Discharge because of his hernia. On March 14th, 1862 Joseph became a recruit for Company A of the 19th Indiana and was with the regiment until his death at the Battle of Brawner Farm on August 28th, 1862.
