Private Shields was admitted to the hospital soon after arriving in Washington D.C. in the fall of 1861. He was diagnosed and was reported to have died of pericarditis.

After the war his home town of Dunkirk Indiana named their GAR post the "Benjamin Shields Post # 289" in his honor.
