Musician Shepard first served in Company B of the 8th Indiana Infantry when war first broke out in April 1865. He was discharged from that regiment and immediately joined the 19th Indiana. He was discharged from the service when the band was disbanded in the late summer of 1862.
He filed for a pension in August of 1879.
