Private Russell was shot in the back of his right thigh at the Battle of Brawner Farm on August 28th, 1862. Because of his wound he could no longer perform his duties with the 19th Indiana but would transfer to the 2nd Battalion of the Veteran Reserve Corps.

He filed for a pension in February of 1863.
