Private Poland was wounded at the Battle of Antietam on September 17th, 1862 and again on May 5th, 1864 at the Battle of the Wilderness. In the fall of 1864 he transferred to Company E of the 20th Indiana Infantry serving there until his muster out as 1st Sergeant on July 12th, 1865.

He filed for a pension in November of 1867.
