Private Mendenhall was wounded in the leg at the Battle of Brawner Farm on August 28th, 1862 and briefly taken prisoner. John was again wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness on May 5th, 1864. This time it was a gunshot wound to the left arm which resulted in the amputation of that limb. He was discharged for disability on September 29th, 1864.

 

He filed for a pension in October of 1864.
