Private McGinnis received a gun shot wound to the right cheek at the Battle of Brawner Farm on August 28th, 1862.
By the fall of 1864 the ranks of the 19th Indiana were so depleted from combat casualties and sickness the remaining soldiers were folded into the 20th Indiana Infantry.
James would serve out the remainder of the war in Company I of that regiment mustering out on July 12th, 1865.
He came to America from Ireland in the mid 1840's.
