Private McDaniel was detached to Battery B of the 4th U.S. Artillery from July of 1862 to December of 1863. He was transferred to Company I of the 20th Indiana Infantry in the late fall of 1864 and served there until his muster out on July 12th, 1865. During his time with the 20th Indiana he was a teamster and a ambulance driver.
He filed for a pension in November of 1891.
