Private May first served in a three month regiment before joining the 19th Indiana. He was a Corporal in Company F of the 55th Indiana Infantry from June of 1862 to September of 1862. While in the 19th Indiana he was shot in the left breast at the Battle of the Wilderness on May 5th, 1864 and would be discharged for disability later that year.

He filed for a pension in June of 1875.
