Private Leavell was transferred to Company E of the 20th Indiana Infantry in the fall of 1864 and served there until his muster out for disability on June 19th, 1865. On June 19th, 1864 while on the picket line near Petersburg Virginia James suffered a heat stroke. 

He filed for a pension in October of 1882.
