Private Knapp was wounded at the Battle of Brawner Farm on August 28th, 1862. At the Battle of Gettysburg he was captured but was able to return to the regiment later that summer. He was again wounded at the Battle of Petersburg on June 18th, 1864. In the fall of 1864 he was transferred to Company E of the 20th Indiana Infantry where he serve until his discharge for disability on June 13th, 1865.
He filed for a pension in June of 1865.
