Private Kirby was born in England and came to America in 1853 with his parents. He was wounded at the Battle of South Mountain on September 14th, 1862. By the fall of 1864 the ranks of the 19th Indiana were so depleted from combat casualties and sickness they were folded into the 20th Indiana Infantry. Thomas was moved to Company A of that regiment. When he mustered out of the service in 1865 he held the rank of 1st Lieutenant.
He filed for a pension in March of 1887 but died three weeks later. His widow Ellen did receive a widows pension starting later that year.
