Private Kirby was born in England and came to America with his parents in 1853. He was severely wounded during the fighting around Petersburg Virginia on June 24th, 1864. By the fall of 1864 the ranks of the 19th Indiana were so depleted from combat casualties and sickness they were moved into the 20th Indiana Infantry. Henry was put into Company A were he served until his muster out on July 12th, 1865.

He started to receive a pension in 1871.
