Private Johnson was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1st, 1863 and again during the fighting around Petersburg Virginia on July 18th, 1864. He mustered out in the fall of that year holding the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

He filed for a pension in September of 1877.
