Mustered into service as a Private on July 29th, 1861

Born 1840

Died July 1914

Buried Broadway Cemetery, Los Angeles County California

John Clinton Hiatt

Private Hiatt was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1st, 1863. He was captured in May of 1864 and was reported as missing.

After the war he moved to California where he was in the newspaper business.

After he passed away he was buried at the Broadway Cemetery located in Whittier California. By 1959 the city declared the cemetery a public nuisance and covered all of the graves with fill dirt and turned it into a park. The city did give time for living relatives to move their loved ones to other cemeteries. Those graves that remained were covered up. John C. Hiatt's body was never removed so he is listed on a memorial plaque that is now located in the park and he remains there today.
