Private Ham is listed as being killed at the Battle of South Mountain on September 14th, 1862 but was also reported as being killed at the Battle of Antietam on September 17th, 1862. Captain Robert W. Hamilton of Company C says in a letter to the local paper soon after the September battles that James H. Ham was killed at Antietam.
His burial location is unknown.
