Private Cline injured his right shoulder soon after arriving in Washington D.C. in the late summer of 1861. He was discharged for disability on November 11th, 1861. On February 28th, 1865 he joined Company E of the 147th Indiana Infantry where he served until his muster out on July 25th of that same year.

He filed for a pension in December of 1891.
