John Pierson Butler

Mustered into service as a Private on July 29th, 1861

Soon after arriving in Washington D.C. in the fall of 1861 Private Butler was detailed as a Hospital Steward at the Patent Office Hospital. He performed so well that the regular army offered him a position which he accepted. He served in that position from June 26th, 1862 until June 23rd, 1865 were he mustered out while at Hilton Head South Carolina.
