Sergeant Branson rose in the ranks until he achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant by the time he left the service in the fall of 1864. He was slightly wounded in the head at the Battle of Brawner Farm on August 28th, 1862. At the Battle of South Mountain on September 14th he was again wounded in the head but this time it was severe. He was shot behind his right ear. The bullet remained in his head until the day he died. He was wounded a third time at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1st, 1863.

He filed for a pension in January of 1866.
