Private Blanchard was promoted to Ordnance Sergeant in the late winter of 1861 and later to the rank of Sergeant Major. Asa would be killed in action at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1st, 1863 while waving the flag trying to rally the men. His last words were reported as being, "Tell mother I never faltered."
His mother Harriet Blanchard lived in Washington D.C. and during the war she volunteered in the hospitals taking care of wounded soldiers. In her obituary in 1897 it stated she, "closed the eyes of no less than 183 soldiers during the rebellion."
