A little over a year after joining the 19th Indiana he became sick and spent over a year in hospitals located in Washington D.C., Philadelphia and New York. He came back to the regiment in time for General Grants spring campaign of 1864. At the Battle of the Wilderness on May 5th he was shot in the ankle and leg and spent another three months in the hospital. He transferred to the 2nd Battalion of the Veterans Reserve Corps.
In October of 1887 he filed for a pension but it was never granted for some reason.
