Sergeant Benton was wounded in the thigh and breast at the Battle of Brawner Farm on August 28th, 1862 and would die from those wounds the next month.
After hearing of his sons wounding Toms father went to Washington D.C. to find his son. Mr. Benton found his son, moved him into a private home where a doctor could take care of him. After being assured that Tom would recover his father returned to Indiana. Unfortunately his condition got worse and he died soon after his father left for home.
