Private Adams was wounded at the Battle of Antietam on September 17th, 1862 and again on May 6th, 1864 at the Battle of the Wilderness. By the fall of 1864 he was promoted to Corporal and was transferred to Company I of the 20th Indiana Infantry were he served until his muster out on February 14th, 1865.
