Private Woods was reported as missing in action at the Battle of the Wilderness in May of 1864. He would later return to the regiment and transfer to the 20th Indiana Infantry in the fall of 1864 with the other surviving members of the 19th Indiana.
He filed for and started to receive a pension in 1886.
