Private Spitler was wounded on May 5th, 1864 at the Battle of the Wilderness. In the fall of that same year he transferred to the 20th Indiana Infantry with the other surviving members of the 19th. When John mustered out he held the rank of Corporal.
He filed for a pension in 1868.
