Private Smith was discharged for disability because he broke a leg while in route to Washington D.C. in the summer of 1861.

In the summer of 1862 Clinton again joined the Army by mustering in as a Sergeant in Company E of the 84th Indiana Infantry. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant of Company C in January 1863 and served until his honorably discharge on April 2nd, 1864.
