Private Skinner  was discharged from the service early in the war because of disability. He returned home and recuperated to the point where he again joined the Army. He mustered into Company D of the 84th Indiana Infantry as a Private. He served in that regiment until his muster out on June 14th, 1865.

He received a pension after the war.
