Private Rathbun was promoted to Corporal by the time he was wounded in the leg at the Battle of Antietam on September 17th, 1862. He later would be discharged from the service because of this wound.
After the war he worked as a barber and also as a farmer. Oil was discovered on his land and he became a wealthy man.
He filed for and started to receive a pension in 1863.
