Sergeant Rardin was wounded at the Battle of South Mountain on September 14th, 1862 and was discharged from the service because of that wound in February of 1863 .He was a 1st Lieutenant when he left the 19th. On December 10th, 1863 he enlisted in Company B of the 9th Indiana Cavalry where he mustered out as a Captain on August 28th, 1865.
John also was a veteran of the Mexican War.
He received a pension soon after leaving the Army.
