MICHAEL J. OWENS MUSTERED INTO THE 19TH INDIANA ON JULY 29TH, 1861 SERVING UNTIL HE TRANSFERRED TO WESTERN GUNBOAT DUTY ON FEBURARY 18TH, 1862. HE WOULD MUSTER OUT OF SERVICE IN MARCH OF 1863 ONLY TO ENLIST AGAIN ON DECEMBER 23, 1863 WITH THE 13TH INDIANA CAVALRY. HE WAS CAPTURED ON SEPTEMBER 30TH, 1864 AT NEW MARKET ALABAMA AND SENT TO THE PRISON CAMP IN DALLAS COUNTY ALABAMA. HE WOULD THEN BE SENT TO ANDERSONVILLE PRISON WHERE STAYED UNTIL HIS EXCHANGE AT VICKSBURG ON APRIL 10TH, 1865. MICHAEL WAS ON BOARD THE SULTANA WHEN IT EXPLODED ON APRIL 27TH AND SURVIVED. HE WAS SENT BACK TO A HOSPITAL IN VICKSBURG ARRIVING THERE ON APRIL 29TH. RECORDS SHOW HE WAS MUSTERED OUT OF SERVICE ON JULY 25TH, 1865 WHILE IN INDIANAPOLIS.

THE BELOW NEWSPAPER ARTICLE IS FROM THE MUNCIE EVENING PRESS DATED MAY 28TH, 1917 STATING THAT MICHAEL J. OWENS DROWNED DURING THE SINKING OF THE  SULTANA. HE IN FACT DIDN'T DIE BUT SURVIVED AND POSSIBLEY DIED SOON AFTER MUSTERING OUT IN JULY OF 1865.
