Private Miller was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1st, 1863.  In the fall of 1864 he transferred to Company A of the 20th Indiana Infantry where he would finish his service.

John filed for a pension in April of 1865.

The American Legion has him listed as being buried in the Soldiers Section of the Locust Hill Cemetery but his stone was not found. At some point in time the cemetery replaced  most of the headstones in this section and probably couldn't read many of them. The result is a high number of "U.S. Soldier"  headstones .  John has one of these stones.
