John W. May first served in a three month regiment before joining the 19th Indiana. He was a Corporal in Company F of the 55th Indiana Infantry from June of 1862 to September of 1862. While in the 19th Indiana Private May was shot in the left breast at the Battle of the Wilderness on May 5th, 1864 and would be discharged from the service becasue of that wound later that same year.
He filed for a pension in June of 1875.
