Private Knapp was wounded at the Battle of Brawner Farm on August 28th, 1862. At the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1st, 1863 he was captured for a short time returning to the regiment later that summer. He was again wounded at the Battle of Petersburg Virginia on June 18th, 1864. In the fall of 1864 he transferred to the 20th Indiana with the other surviving members of the 19th.
In June of 1865 he filed for a pension.
