Assistant Surgeon Kendrick contracted typhoid fever soon after arriving in Washington D.C. in the summer of 1861 and almost died from the illness.

He would be discharged in early 1862 and he returned to Indianapolis Indiana where he continued to practice medicine.

 

He filed for a pension in May of 1868.
