Private Jelf was wounded at the Battle of South Mountain on September 14th, 1862. He would be discharged from the service because of his wounds later that same year. On August 25th, 1863 he joined Battery B of the 5th U.S. Artillery serving there until his muster out on August 25th, 1868.
