Sergeant Hart quickly rose in the ranks and was Captain by the summer of 1862. He was wounded in the leg at the Battle of South Mountain on September 14th, 1862. He was captured at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1st, 1863 and taken to the Libby Prison in Richmond Virginia and later transferred to Columbia South Carolina where he was exchanged in the winter of 1865.
