Private Duke was captured at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1st, 1863 but soon returned to the regiment. He was again captured on May 5th, 1864 at the Battle of the Wilderness. He spent time at the Andersonville Prison in Georgia and the Florence Prison in South Carolina until his release in 1865.
He filed for and started to receive a pension in 1883.
