Private Brown was severely wounded on May 5th, 1864 at the Battle of the Wilderness. By the fall of that same year the ranks of the 19th Indiana were so depleted from combat casualties and sickness they were folded into the 20th Indiana Infantry. Amasa would continue to serve in Company I of that regiment. He was mustered out of service on July 12th, 1865.
