Sergeant Bonar was severely wounded at the Battle of Brawner Farm on August 28th, 1862. He was shot in the left breast and was orignally reported as killed in action. He was discharged for disability and returned home.

Samuel would later become a physician.

He filed for and started to receive a pension in 1863.
