Private Altenburg was discharged for disability in December of 1862 holding the rank of Corporal. On October 25th, 1864 he joined Company M of the 1st Regiment, Indiana Heavy Artillery where he served until his muster out on October 23rd, 1865.
He filed for a pension in July of 1863.
