Private  Adams was wounded at the Battle of Antietam on September 17th, 1862 and again on May 6th, 1864 at the Battle of the Wilderness. By the fall of 1864 he was promoted to Corporal and was transferred to the 20th Indiana Infantry where he served until the end of the war.

He filed for and started to receive a pension in 1877.
